Consumers use food supplements containing red yeast rice to control and maintain normal blood cholesterol levels. However, the European permanent committee SCOPAFF has adopted a scientific opinion on the safety of monacolins in red yeast rice restricting its use: monacolins are now accepted in a quantity less than 3 mg per day.
